Today’s Quick Tip addresses Bare Metal Restore (BMR) for Citrix XenServer. This is a popular virtualized environment used by many of our customers. While the benefits of BMR to a hosting provider are clear, the process for performing a BMR of a paravirtualized machine may not be as obvious.
A challenge that we have seen customers run into with BMR of a Citrix Xen paravirtualized (PV) machine is that the BMR is successful, but the restored machine does not boot properly or does not run in a paravirtualized mode. This is due to the nature of backups of paravirtualized machines (using xvda instead of sda) as shown below.
Here are the steps to set it up:
1) The machine that is created or used for booting the R1Soft Recovery ISO runs in a HVM. You will complete the necessary steps to BMR to an “Alternate Host Name/IP” using the ISO that is either burned to physical media or placed in an NFS Share that is accessible as a “NFS ISO Library”.
2) The xvdaX type partitions from the original PV need to be restored to the available sdaX type partitions discovered by the R1Soft Recovery environment.
3) You will need to convert the successfully bare metal restored machine back into a paravirtualized VM.
