If you have a CDP 3.0 Enterprise Server installed and regularly process replication of sensitive and important data, you already back up to a CDP 3.0 Disk Safe. Backed by Atomic Commit and ACID transactions, the CDP 3.0 Disk Safe provides industrial-strength protection for your data; however, as hardware, the CDP Server itself is still susceptible to crashes due to hardware failure, virus attack, etc.

To be prepared for such an event, you can run a secondary CDP Server, thus enabling you to protect the machine on which your primary CDP Server installed.  The function that allows you to do this is called Multi-Point Replication and is built into your CDP 3.0 Enterprise Server.

Configuring secondary replication for additional protection is easy to do. Once you have installed a CDP Agent on your primary CDP Enterprise Server machine, you can leverage CDP 3.0’s multi-point replication feature to make a copy of the open Disk Safe(s) from your primary CDP Server. The selected Disk Safe(s) can then be replicated to your secondary CDP Server (a unique replication schedule can be configured for each CDP Server). For even greater protection, the copy of your Disk Safe(s) can be replicated to an off-site CDP Server, giving you both on-site and off-site backups.

82 and Mostly Sunny, with 100 Percent Chance of Cloud

Feb 22, 2011 In: Events, Giveaway

Say WHAT?

No, this is not the work of a confused meteorologist. We are talking about the forecast for Orlando, Florida, site of the 2011 Parallels Summit, which kicks off today at the Gaylord Palms Hotel and Convention Center. While Weather.com tells us that sunny skies and warm temps should prevail for the duration of the Summit (good news for those of you hoping to mix in a little pleasure with your business!), the Cloud will likely steal the spotlight.

The annual Parallels Summit is one of the industry’s largest gatherings of hosting and Cloud services providers, and this year, it is the first event for the R1Soft team following the release of CDP 3.0 Enterprise Edition.

If you’ll be at Parallels, make a point to stop by booth #140 to say hi! We’ll have R1Soft T-shirts and Agent R1 penguins, and booth visitors can also enter for a chance to win a NOOKcolor (entertainment for the flight home, anyone??) Of course, we’ll also be on hand to demo CDP 3.0, answer questions on our backup software, and help you identify the right product to fit your needs.

Hope to see you soon!

This fine work week is quickly coming to a close at the R1Soft office (woohoo!), and we would like to end it on a high note. Since cocktails and blogs mix about as well as oil and water (read: not very well at all), we are going with option 2: announcing the winners of R1Soft’s end-of-year giveaway! If you will recall, the contest ran from October – December of last year. We thank ALL of you that entered, but alas, only two could win. Without further ado, we congratulate Elton Cranfill of The Nexus Group and Jan Schumacher of webhoster.de, proud new owners of an LCD TV and PS3, respectively.

Didn’t win this time? Don’t despair! The year has only just begun. Stay tuned (via this blog, Twitter.com/R1SoftCDPBackup or fb.com/R1Soft) for new contests and giveaway opportunities; we’ve got lots of good stuff planned for 2011.

Happy Weekending!

Interested in migrating from Continuous Data Protection® (CDP) 2.0 to 3.0? Here are some tips and best practices from the Head Geek that will help you get the most out of your migration.

If you are interested in migrating from Continuous Data Protection® (CDP) 2.0 to 3.0, there are a few considerations to account for before making the move. While you should be aware of CDP 3.0’s numerous improvements and upgrades, you will also need a solid grasp of the preparation and installation process before making the move.

With its all-new Disk Safe® storage engine, CDP 3.0 offers an industrial strength design that is ready to withstand O/S crashes and power losses. Able to scale to up to 64 TB (128+ TB with compression) per file system protected, CDP 3.0 is even more resistant to file system fragmentation.

While installation may appear to be a matter of simply installing 3.0 Enterprise Edition’s CDP Server and migrating agents from 2.0 to 3.0, you will need to make some decisions on how to proceed: whether to use a separate dedicated server as recommended or, if you have enough resources, run both 2.0 and 3.0 on the same hardware.

Need help determining how much storage you will need to backup X amount of servers?

Here’s a quick tip from the Head GEEK that will help you when analyzing capacity planning requirements.

If you’re determining how much storage you’ll need on your server, the best approach is to get a benchmark or average data change in your environment. R1Soft CDP recommends you use the following example and formula to obtain your benchmark.

For example: If you have 1TB disk, about 400GB of data at any given time, and the average data change between backups is 100MB and you wish to keep 30 recovery points. The equation would look like this:
EX: (1TB * 5%) + 4OOGB + (100MB * 30) ~= about 1.2TB per server without compression. Using even lower levels of compression, you can cut this amount by 50 percent.

You should note that when you take a snapshot, there is a little overhead for the actual file system formatting (about 5% of disk size).
